Notable Initiatives
Movement Disorder Fellowship – Provided a monthly stipend to a physician for a Fellowship in Movement Disorders in London. He returned to Alabama as the first Movement Disorder Specialist.
UAB Basic Science (MD/PhD) Researcher – Encouraged UAB to employ its first basic science (MD/PhD) researcher for Parkinson’s disease.
PD Research Appropriation – Received an annual appropriation from the Alabama state legislature for Parkinson’s disease research and treatment at UAB.
Collaboration with Mississippi – Assisted Mississippi is establishing an APDA Information and Referral Center.
Young Onset Parkinson’s Support Group – PAA helped set up and provided financial assistance for the first Young Onset Parkinson’s Support Group in Alabama.
$750,000 Research Commitment to UAB – PAA pledged $100,000 annually to UAB for seven years for procurement of a research chair and for the completion of a new research center. For this commitment, the new research center was named The Parkinson Association of Alabama, Inc. Parkinson’s Disease Research Laboratory.
Caldwell Lab at University of Alabama – Research interns were funded to facilitate research at The Caldwell Lab – Home of the “Worm Shack” at the University of Alabama that is producing cutting edge Parkinson’s research.
